My name is Ian Ecclestone and I wish to experiment with the capabilities of CSS and HTML.
So over the forthcoming months I shall visualise one aspect of the book I am currently reading.

In chapter three, of On Roads by Joe Moran, the author describes how Richard (known as 'Jock') Kinneir, Chief Designer to the Advisory Committee on Traffic signs for motorways, commissioned research which showed that a motorway sign would have to be readable at 600 feet and the lettering at least 12 inches tall.
Kinneir controversal solution to this, was to ditch block capitals in favour of a mixed-case sanserif font. In the mid-1950s this abandoning of capitals and serifs was considered very subverse.
To celebrate this very english act of avant-garde, Kinneir's version of the 1890s German font, Akzidenz Grotesk which he named Transport has been included within this webpage.
